Nuove Lettere - Introduction

It came out in Naples in june 1990, founded by Roberto Pasanisi in collaboration with one of his students, a new international poetry and literature review, Nuove Lettere (New Letters), sponsored by the Presidency of the District of Naples and published by the ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF CULTURE INNAPLES (prominent Organization in the Campania Region recognized by the Ministry of Culture). The prestigious editorial staff is composed of Roberto Pasanisi (also director), Alberto Bevilacqua, Constantin Frosin, Antonio Illiano, Maria Luisa Spaziani, Mario Susko, Násos Vaghenás, Nguyen Van Hoan; the editor in chief is Vittorio Lucariello; the secretarial office is managed by Maria Peruzzini. They had belonged to it since the beginning till the untimely passing away, Dario Bellezza, Franco Fortini and Giorgio Saviane.
“Nuove Lettere”, high number printed, delivered all over the world, is constantly growing and it has made its name known now as one of the most prestigious reviews in its specific area.
Divided into five sections (Poetry, Fiction, Essays, Reviews and News), it was born to bridge a gap: fearless standing on the ‘border area’ between ‘academic culture’ and ‘artists’ culture’, aims to build a kind of trait d’union between the “academic reviews” and the “militant reviews”, marked, as everybody knows, by a too much rigid separation.
Nuove Lettere refers, from the planning point of view, through its name, to the famous Hellenic review Tà néa grámmata, which has marked, not many years before, the renewal and rebirth of the neo-greek literature in the 20th century, starting some of the greatest Hellenic poets of the century. It means, in fact, to make space for, besides the institutionalized names of the European literary panorama, also new writers who, even if very talented, are still unknown, either because of their young age or because out of the cultural Establishment.
If, on the one hand, Universities, become pure places of bureaucratic and political power, have progressively been losing their institutional role as cultural working out and meditation on art fulcrum; if, on the other hand the ‘militant intellectuals’ let themselves be guiltily tamed by the power in the reassuring shadow of the Media Great Brother, Nuove Lettere – convinced of the rescueing role of art, a real ‘last shore’ for mankind – does not mean to forget the criticism task to the system and its institutions (especially if this is, like ours, ruined and corrupted): therefore, the Weltanschauung of the review is close, from the philosophical point of view, to that one of the Frankfurt School.
So, “Nuove Lettere”, the only one review in its kind, was born, it is no coincidence, in Naples: no man’s land, where, in the tragic coexistence of Eden and Hell, it is becoming more and more dramatic the gap between ‘intelligentsia’ and ‘common people’, while in the daily trench warfare for the ‘quality of life’, dirtiness, inefficiencies and crime (in its most varied expressions) are gaining day by day new ground, while the institutions are completely absent.
“Nuove Lettere” was introduced on the 14th of march 1991 at “Circolo della Stampa” in Naples, edited by the “Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici”, by Giorgio Barberi Squarotti, Alberto Mario Moriconi and Roberto Pasanisi.

The Italian Culture Institute of Naples (ICI ONLUS) has lived since 1990 and is at present directed by Roberto Pasanisi.
From the beginning, in no suspicious times yet, the Institute has conceived culture in its broader sense, encouraged by deep and social implications: it has denounced, during the programme of its academic year and through its review “Nuove Lettere”, the corruption and inefficiency of the Establishment, the shadiness and secret arrangement among politicians, members of the Mafia and Camorra, the client-management of power; emphasizing again, in the meantime, the strong need for a return to lawfulness and a political and social life based on the solemn values of ethics, culture, justice.
As a matter of fact, one of the causes of what has happened and is happening depends upon the gap which is progressively produced between culture (seen in its broader meaning, and consequently ethically, too) and politics: in this way politics has become a plain technique and from there it has become the most wicked business of all. The fight for the future politics shall be played on culture.
The Institute, during its working, has put on more and more, a civil role (as well as literary and cultural), as a meeting place of what people call now ‘civil society’; a political lab, in its ethimological term ( that is ‘citizen’s learning’) but always above super partes.
In fact, the Institute works, contrary to other prestigious city structures, in direct contact with the town, people, looking for an answer, from a cultural point of view, to their demands and needs for civil and social reference points. For this reason, it works in a mutual and profitable collaboration with other associations and cultural-social organizations.
The Institute, based on democratic principles and ideologically very close to the Frankfurt Philosophy School (Adorno, Marcuse, Löwenthal, Fromm, Horkheimer), is characterized by the most indiscriminate opening, against all ideological bars, but two: intellectual and moral honesty and goodwill.
The Italian Culture Institute in Naples, sometimes in collaboration with other cultural associations, arranges for, during the course of the year, inside its own academic one, a constant and very qualitative cultural activity, such as meetings, conferences, lectures, introductions to and about political and cultural subjects; a course in Neapolitan Language and Literature and a Standing Lab on Contemporary Poetry; it publishes the international poetry and literature Review “Nuove Lettere” and three garlands (poetry, fiction, essay); it sets up an International Poetry and Literature Award “Nuove Lettere”. The ICI ONLUS comprises the CISAT (Italian Art-Therapy Study Centre) which organinizes a theoretic-practical course in Psychology (Art-Therapy and Autogenous Training) and the Foreigners’ Free University "Francesco De Sanctis" (LIUPS).
The Scientific Committee of this Institute is composed of: Constantin Frosin (Professor of French Language and Literature at State University “Dunarea de Jos” at Galati; writer), Antonio Illiano (Full Professor of Italian Language and Literature at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), Roberto Pasanisi (Professor of Italian Language and Literature at State University of International Relations MGIMO, Moscow; Head of the Italian Culture Institute in Naples and of “Nuove Lettere”; writer), Vittorio Pellegrino (already Chairman of Naples Tourist Authority; neuropsychiatrist, Head of Mental Health Department and Professor at Naples University “Federico II”), Násos Vaghenás (Full Professor of Literary Theory and Criticism at Athens University; one of the most famous contemporary Greek poets) and Nguyen Van Hoan (Professor of Italian and Vietnamese Literature at Hanoi University). Besides, other two members have worked here till their untimely death the writers Dario Bellezza, Franco Fortini (already Full Professor of History of Criticism at Siena University) and Giorgio Saviane. Assistant Professor: opening. Assistant Manager: Maria Peruzzini. Secretary: Ernesto L'Arab, Maria Peruzzini (Office Head).

NUOVE LETTERE
International Review of Poetry and Literature
The ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF CULTURE IN NAPLES in collaboration with the international review of poetry and literature Nuove Lettere publishes four collections: two of poetry (both edited by Roberto Pasanisi: one entitled Lo specchio oscuro, the other one Nugae), one of fiction (formerly edited by Giorgio Saviane and entitled La bellezza) and one of literary essays (formerly edited by Franco Fortini and entitledLettere Italiane).
The texts, in whichever language, suggested for the publication must be sent, clearly typewritten, in two copies and followed by a detailed bio-bibliographical sketch (complete with place, day, month and year of birth) to the following address:
Istituto Italiano di Cultura; via Bernardo Cavallino, 89; 80131, Naples (Italy).
They will be examined by a reading Committee set up by the editors of Nuove Lettere: Alberto Bevilacqua, Constantin Frosin, Antonio Illiano, Roberto Pasanisi, Maria Luisa Spaziani, Mario Susko, Násos Vaghenás and Nguyen Van Hoan.
The ITALIAN INSTITUTE OF CULTURE IN NAPLES undertakes to give an answer to the authors in short times.
The publication as volume of the suggested text, in case of favourable opinion of the reading Committee, will be at the expenses of the Institute, that, besides, undertakes to support the work through a proper advertising campaign, to run its diffusion by post among “those in the know” (critics, journalists, writers, etc…) and its members (2.100 all over the world, among them many famous artists and scholars), who will automatically get it as it is included in the ‘membership fee’; and to suggest for a review to the main reviews of the area as well. One of the channels at disposal of the Institute will be represented by Nuove Lettere, of course.
The volume will be edited in elegant layout and printed in 3.000 copies. The author will be able, at his choice, to make his text preceded by a Foreword suggested by himself or ask another one to the Institute which will take steps to entrust one of the members of the reading committee with that.
